■Nevada State Overview
Nevada became a state in 1864. It is the seventh largest U.S. state in land area and 34th in population size (estimated 2.4 million residents). It has been the number one state in percentage population growth for 17 consecutive years (50.5% growth between 1990 and 2000 census). The Las Vegas area, with 1.6 million residents, is the largest city in the state and the fastest growing city in the U.S. for 17 consecutive years. The state capitol is Carson City.
■Nevada Main Industries
Tourism in the number one industry in the state. In 2004 Nevada had 53 million visitors with 37 million just visiting the Las Vegas area. Both directly and indirectly tourism contributes about 75% of the states income.
Other primary industries are:
- Mining (both precious and non-precious mental and non-metallic minerals). Nevada is the third largest producer of gold in the world and it is a major export.
- Manufacturing. The major export from this sector is electronic equipment and parts.
- Warehousing and distribution. Because of the tax situation Nevada is one of the major warehousing/distribution centers for the Western U.S.
- Agriculture. Primary products are beef cattle, alfalfa, potatoes, onions and garlic. Alfalfa (primary feed for dairy cattle) is a major export with 30% of production exported to East Asia
■International Trade and Investment
Exports from Nevada will exceed $4 billion in 2005. Japan is Nevada's fourth largest traditional export partner. For three consecutive years Nevada has been the #2 U.S. state in percentage export growth. Approximately 40% of the foreign companies with U.S. headquarters in Nevada are Japanese companies.
